Matthew Alan Edwards is a music educator who specializes in piano and choral/vocal music education, with an additional interest in composing music that suits the needs of school music ensembles, students, and communities. He moved to Georgia in 2019 to teach piano at M. D. Roberts School of the Arts in Clayton County. Before moving to Georgia, he completed a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Secondary Education (Music Education, Vocal/Choral Emphasis) from The University of Alabama (UA) with Dr. Marvin E. Latimer, Jr. Before that, he earned his Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Organ Performance at UA with Dr. Faythe Freese and graduated Summa cum laude with honors.
Before moving to Georgia, Matthew was the organist and choir director of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He currently serves as the director of music and organist at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Snellville, GA. In 2023, he accepted a position as keyboardist with the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra. His recent compositions include a cantata for choir and chamber orchestra (“In dir ist Freude”) and a concertato on “Come, ye thankful people, come.” Upcoming publications include The St. Matthias Book of Descants and “Home is where the heart is” for SATB choir and piano.
Current professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Education Association (NEA), the Atlanta Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the American Institute of Organbuilders (AIO), and the Spreckels Organ Society (SOS). He also served on the executive committee for the 2017 Birmingham AGO Pipe Organ Encounter Advanced. In his free time, he enjoys biking, kayaking, exploring Georgia’s hiking trails, and going to trivia nights with his friends.
